Commemoration of the Great Upheaval
The project of international commemoration of the Great Upheaval covers the period from 1755 to the beginning of the 19th century. It is categorized in four stages: embarkation (in Acadie), disembarkation (in the United States and Europe), transit/migration (in Acadie, Europe, the United States and the West Indies) and the recolonization of Acadie (in Atlantic Canada, Louisiana, Quebec and France).
The Great Upheaval was a tragic event. The international commemoration project of the Great Upheaval allows the Acadian people to assert themselves and be a model of a community that has shown perseverance.
Since 2005, a total of 16 monuments have been erected, including 5 in New Brunswick, 3 in Nova Scotia, 1 in Prince Edward Island, 1 in Newfoundland and Labrador, 4 in Quebec, 1 in Louisiana, and 1 on Miquelon Island (France). Each monument includes a general text in French and English on the Great Upheaval as well as a specific text (also in French and English) for the site hosting a monument.
